I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letters

of the 6th., 9th., and 12th. instant, regarding the Yao Hsiang

Coal Depot (Coal mortgaged to the National Bank).

in reply I beg to state that in my previous

correspondence, I have fully explained the position and there is

no necessity of further discussion.

As regards the instructions which you have

received from His Majesty's Minister to the effect that he had

moved the wal nu Fu to direct that the coal be handed by me over

to you, and that if I had any charge or claim against Fung Wa Chuo

or the coal, such charge or claim soould be brought in the British

Consular Court, I beg to point out that the coal of the Depot waS

attached as Chou Tung Sheng's property. Now Hung We Chun declares

that it is vested in bin. Even if this were trus, his accounts to

do not tally with the account books seized when the coal was at-

-tached; and accordingly, the godown bookkeeper, Kuang hsun Chu,

should be produced and cross-examined in the interests of justice.

As regards international questions, Officials

of both Countries according to Treaty are merely required to meet

together and consult Chinese officials cannot be called upon to

proceed to your Consulate and lodge charges.

Coming to the present case, I have telegraphed

to the Wai Wu Fu to move His Majesty's Minister to telegraph to

the Governor of Hongkong to have Kuang Hsun Chu produced, and when

the man has been brought up to Canton, 1 will depute Officers to

meet
